A cleaning is the cheapest appointment you will ever have at a dental office, and the one that does most to keep the expensive ones from happening. Here is what it actually costs in Phoenix, and what changes the number.
Routine Cleaning: What You Should Expect to Pay
A routine cleaning — what a dentist calls a prophylaxis — runs roughly $75 to $200 in the Phoenix area when you pay out of pocket. Most people are quoted a package that bundles the cleaning with an exam and X-rays, which typically lands between $150 and $350 for a first visit.
With a PPO plan, this is usually the one thing covered in full. Most plans cover two cleanings a year at 100%, because insurers know perfectly well that prevention is cheaper than paying for the crown later. If you have coverage and are not using those two visits, you are leaving a paid-for benefit on the table every year.
Why a “Deep Cleaning” Costs So Much More
If you have been quoted several hundred dollars, you were almost certainly quoted a deep cleaning — scaling and root planing — not a routine one. They are different procedures.
A routine cleaning removes plaque and tartar from the visible surfaces of your teeth and just under the gumline. A deep cleaning goes beneath the gumline to clean the root surfaces, and it is done when gum disease has already created pockets between tooth and gum.
Deep cleaning is priced per quadrant — your mouth has four — at roughly $150 to $400 each, often with local anaesthetic and usually across two visits. A full-mouth deep cleaning can therefore run $600 to $1,600.
Insurance typically covers deep cleaning at a lower percentage than routine cleaning, because it is classed as a basic or major service rather than preventive. Our guide to whether deep cleaning is really necessary covers when it is genuinely needed and when it is not.
What Moves the Price
How long since your last visit. More time means more hardened tartar, and more time in the chair. This is the single biggest factor.
Whether you have gum disease. Once pockets form, you are in deep-cleaning territory, and afterward on a more frequent maintenance schedule.
X-rays. A new patient usually needs a full set; an existing patient may not need any that visit.
Whether it is your first visit. A new-patient appointment includes a comprehensive exam and an oral cancer screening on top of the cleaning.
Without Insurance
You can still be seen, and the honest advice is not to skip the cleaning to save money — it is the appointment with the best return of any in dentistry.
We give you the cost in writing before we start, and we accept CareCredit so larger treatment can be spread across monthly payments. See insurance and financing options for how that works.
The Arithmetic Worth Doing
Two cleanings a year at $150 each is $300. A single crown after an untreated cavity runs well over $1,000. A root canal in Phoenix starts at $599 before the crown that usually follows it. Gum disease left to progress costs teeth, and replacing one with a dental implant runs $3,000 to $6,000.
Prevention is not a moral argument here. It is just the cheaper path.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Every six months for most people. If you have a history of gum disease you may be placed on a three or four month schedule, which your dentist will explain and which insurance often supports.
Does a dental cleaning hurt?
A routine cleaning should not. If your gums are inflamed you may notice tenderness or some bleeding — that is a sign of gingivitis, not of the cleaning being done badly. Deep cleaning is normally done with local anaesthetic.
Will insurance cover two cleanings a year?
Most PPO plans cover two preventive cleanings annually at 100%. Bring your card and we will verify your specific benefits before your appointment.
What if I have not been to a dentist in years?
You will not be lectured. It is extremely common. We will look at where things actually stand, tell you what is urgent versus what can wait, and build a plan you can complete.
