A smile makeover is not one procedure. It is a plan — a sequence of treatments chosen to fix what actually bothers you about your smile, in an order that makes dental sense. When the underlying problem is alignment, orthodontics is usually where that plan starts.
Here is what a smile makeover involving orthodontics really looks like at our Phoenix practice, and how to judge whether it is right for you.
Why Alignment Comes First
It is tempting to jump straight to the cosmetic finish — whitening, veneers, bonding. But placing cosmetic work on teeth that are still crooked or meeting incorrectly tends to be a short-lived and expensive decision.
Straightening first means the cosmetic work goes onto teeth that are already in the right position, so less tooth structure has to be removed to make things look even. It also spreads your bite force evenly instead of concentrating it on a few teeth, which is what causes new veneers or crowns to chip. And straight teeth are simply easier to keep clean, so the result stays healthy.
That is the difference between a makeover that photographs well on day one and one that still looks right in ten years.
Step One: The Diagnosis
Every makeover starts with an honest examination — not a sales pitch. We look at how your teeth meet, the health of your gums and bone, any decay or failing old work, and your jaw joint.
Gum disease gets treated before anything moves. Moving teeth through unhealthy bone causes damage that is far harder to undo than the original crookedness.
Step Two: Straightening
Once the foundation is sound, we look at how to move the teeth.
Clear aligners in North Phoenix suit most mild to moderate cases — crowding, gaps, or teeth that have drifted after previous orthodontic work. The trays are removable and hard to notice, which is why most of our adult makeover patients choose them.
Braces remain the better answer for significant rotations, large gaps, or genuine bite correction. They work whether or not you remember them, and they can move teeth that trays cannot move predictably. If braces are what your case needs, we will say so.
Timelines vary widely. Minor corrections can finish in a few months; a comprehensive case can run past a year. You will get a real estimate before you start, not after.
Step Three: The Cosmetic Finish
With teeth in position, the finishing work is usually smaller, cheaper, and more conservative than it would otherwise have been.
That might be professional teeth whitening — which is far more effective on aligned teeth, because there are no overlapping surfaces shading unevenly. It might be minor bonding to reshape a chipped or uneven edge. For teeth that are worn, discoloured beyond whitening, or misshapen, cosmetic dentistry options such as veneers may be part of the plan. Old crowns and fillings that no longer match are often replaced at this stage so everything reads as one colour.
Step Four: Holding the Result
Teeth drift back. This is the single most common way people undo a smile makeover they have already paid for.
Wearing your retainer as directed holds everything still while new bone and ligament form around the roots. Our after-care instructions cover the routine, and regular dental cleanings keep the gums healthy underneath.
What It Costs
Because a makeover is a sequence, the cost depends entirely on which steps you actually need. Orthodontics is usually the largest single component — see our breakdowns of clear aligner costs in Phoenix and braces costs in Arizona for current ranges.
Most PPO plans contribute toward the orthodontic portion, often as a lifetime rather than annual maximum, while purely cosmetic work is generally not covered. We accept most PPO plans and offer CareCredit financing — see insurance and financing.
You will get the full plan and the full cost in writing before anything begins, and it can be staged across months or years rather than done all at once.
Is a Smile Makeover Right for You?
The honest answer depends on what is bothering you. If it is one discoloured tooth, you do not need a makeover. If you avoid smiling in photographs, if your bite has never felt right, or if years of small fixes have stopped matching each other, then a coordinated plan will serve you better than another patch.
Dr. Troy Stansberry will tell you which of these you are — including when the answer is that you need less treatment than you expected.
